Getaway 2024 Class Information

Elizabeth Bauman – “Wonderful World”

Other than collecting your fabrics and supplies, there is nothing else I want you to prepare.  The first day we will trace all the pieces on the fusible web, and “rough-cut” around them.  Then we can start choosing which fabric to use for each of them.

This is the first time I have taught the class—and it’s also my first time at the Getaway!–so I’m not sure exactly how far you will get on the project.  But I do think you can get the entire top fused down and seamed together.  If you get that far, I will give you instruction on how to do the machine applique.  And if you are super-driven to use all your “free time” on “homework,” then in order to finish your quilt, you will want 3/4-1 yd. for backing, and a piece of batting about 30″ X 30″, and later—binding!

Nonie McDevitt – Chandelier Quilt

Hello everyone, I’m so excited to be able to see everyone at the Getaway. I am sending a copy of the original email with materials list for the 60″ by 60″ original quilt with links to the free pattern(s). Our class is full so we will have two sharing each table.  We have done that before so we should be fine.

Your quilt can easily be made bigger by adding more blocks and borders.  If you decide to make your quilt larger, remember to get extra fabrics for backing, blocks, backgrounds, borders and binding.

Also, I ask that you limit perfumes and strong scents so those with asthma and other breathing issues can enjoy the class.

Cathy Parker – Crazy for Kaleidoscopes

I am so glad you have signed up for my Kaleidoscope class for the 2024 NEORQC Getaway! This is a fun project, and I can’t wait to see what all you creative people do to make your own unique quilt.

Even though kaleidoscope quilts can be quick to make up, they can provide a great opportunity to get creative. Quilts can be made as scrappy or as planned as you like. Here are some examples to inspire you- https://pin.it/6gDjV76

I’ve attached a coloring sheet if you would like to play around with it as you think about your design options.

Fabric requirements vary with the size of quilt you would like to make.

Materials / Templates / Rulers Needed: MORE IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A LARGER QUILT!

·         1 1/2 yards each of 2 fabrics (or scrappy equivalent in 4 ½” Strips at least 12” long), or even 3 yards of one fabric if you want a two color quilt

·         3 yards background

·         Kaleido-Ruler, small (Marti Mitchell) preferred or Kaleidoscope Ruler (Creative Grids) (If you use the large Marti Mitchell ruler you will need wider strips)

You can order small Marti Mitchell rulers from me for  about $8.50. Let me know ASAP if you need a ruler! I will only be able to place one order and I will need to do that before the end of the year.

Helpful Tools (besides your regular sewing supplies/machine cords, etc)

  • Ironing pad and iron. Clapper (if you have one)
  • 8 1/2″ or 9 1/2″ square ruler (not necessary but nice to have)
  • A ruler at least 12″ long (you shouldn’t need a larger one)
  • A flannel backed tablecloth or portable design wall

PRECUTTING INSRUCTIONS

You will be using an equal number of background and feature fabric pieces for most designs.

  • Cut at least two 4 1/2″ by width of fabric WOF strips from each of your feature fabrics, or at least twenty 4 1/2″ by 12″ strips. Those strips can be longer if desired.
  • Cut at least one 3 1/4″ WOF strip from your feature fabrics
  • Cut at least four  4 1/2″ strips WOF from background fabric
  • Cut at least two 3 1/4″ strips WOF from background fabric

SCRAPPY NOTE: Background can be scrappy, too. Make sure 4 1/2″ strips are at least 12″ long and 3 1/4″ strips are at least 6 1/2″ long
